About Archaeological Survey of India

The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) under the Ministry of Culture is the premier organisation for the archaeological researches and protection of the cultural heritage of the nation. Maintenance of ancient monuments and archaeological sites and remains of national importance is the prime concern of ASI. Besides it regulates all archaeological activities in the country as per provisions of the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958. It also regulates Antiquities and Art Treasures Act, 1972. For the maintenance of ancient monuments and archaeological sites and remains of national importance the entire country is divided into 24 circles. The organisation has a large workforce of trained archaeologists, conservators, epigraphist, architects and scientists for conducting archaeological research projects through its Circles, Museums, Excavation Branches, Prehistory Branches, Epigraphy Branches, Science Branches, Horticulture Branches, Building Survey Project, Temple Survey Project and Underwater Archaeology wings.

About Regional Directorate, Eastern Region, Archaeological Survey of India, Kolkata

The Directorate, Archaeological Survey of India, New Delhi created its five Regional Directorate in 2009 to administer and supervise the works of Circles and Branches under the respective region. The Regional Directorates are located at New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bhopal and Bangalore. The Regional Directorate, Eastern Region looks after the work of 377 monuments of national importance through its six circles and conducts fresh researches and archaeological excavations and explorations through its two Excavation Branches located at Patna and Bhubaneswar.
